Hamberg Cemetery in Roodepoort to re-open

The Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is re-opening the previously dormant Hamberg Cemetery in Roodepoort on the 12th June 2025. At least 38 of the 42 cemeteries operated by the JCPZ in Gauteng are at full capacity.
The 0.65ha cemetery, with 50 known graves, can accommodate between 1,500 and 2,000 more. It was established in 1888. The earliest grave in the cemetery is dated 1889, an infant Elizabeth Johanna Smook. The last recorded burial was in May 2020. The cemetery lay dormant for many years.

The old known graves mostly of miners’ families that lived and worked in the area.

A baby boy was found abandoned at six weeks old when someone dressed him in a white onesie, wrapped him in a blue blanket and left him to die in a large hole in the ground next to a highway in Johannesburg. It was midnight on a cold night in May and the Covid curfew was in place. Three homeless men looking for a place to keep warm heard him crying. As two of the men climbed into the hole to find the baby, the other flagged down a police car patrolling the area. The officer called for backup and the second responder, a policewoman, rescued Ezra. He was taken to a place of safety for abandoned babies, where he received love and care. Baby Ezra was in the home for about six 6 weeks. He developed a respiratory issue. Frantic efforts to save him failed and he died.
